The annual Ashwaubenon Bowling Alley Top 64/32 tournament was held Monday May 12th and it brought out a little bit of both the old and new.
On the women’s side, Morgan Stary returned to the winner’s circle, winning her third Top 32 title. Her other two titles were in 2019 and 2021. Two-time defending champion Caitlyn Phillips made the cut to the top 16 women, qualifying 10th, but lost in the second round.
It took a two-game pinfall of 325 to make the top 16 for the women, with the qualifiers advancing to a bracketed two game total pins match play to advance.
In the semi-finals, Stary advanced to the championship match with a 503-345 victory over Kim Felton. Devan Gearhart also advanced with a 383-342 triumph over Traci Brown.
In the final, Morgan jumped to a comfortable lead after game one with a 206-167 margin, before winning the title with a 188-154 score for a two-game total of 394-321 over Gearhart.
For the men, a new Top 64 champion was crowned in 14-year-old Clayton Allen, the youngest winner in the tournament’s history. Last year’s champion Ken Kempf was unable to defend his title due to injury.
In the semi-finals, Jake Johnson outlasted Bryan Maccoux 407-383 while Allen blistered to a 447-333 victory over fellow youth bowler Josiah Claussen.
The final was filled with drama as Johnson jumped to a 233-184 conquest in game one to go up by 49 pins over Allen after the first ten frames. The unflappable Allen, however, kept his composure and found his line in game two, coming from behind for a 237-174 victory, to win the two-game match 421-407.
